Spotted Hyena with a collar that was replaced
Spotted Hyena with a collar that was replaced

Dear donors,

We have raised a total of $7391.59 of our $16,000.00 goal through grants, GlobalGiving donations and private donations. We have purchased two research collars and will be ordering another collar soon.

In December 2024 we successfully collared an adult female Spotted Hyena. Data gathered from the spotted hyena since we started:

  1. She has covered 614.16km in 60 days, walking +/-
10km per night. She traverses over six properties
and has a territory of roughly 6000 hectares. Her
core home range covers and area of about 1200
hectares. We have determined where her den site
is and have installed trail cameras to
monitor her, her cubs and the rest of her clan to
check for any snares or snare related injuries
    popping up.
  2. Through following up on her collar data we have discovered multiple carcasses of wild animals killed in snares including that of a male lion, waterbuck bull, buffalo cow and multiple impala.
  3. We have discovered and destroyed a very active poacher's camp after she visited the site to scavenge on the remains of the poachers victims.
  4. We removed 89 poachers snares after following up on the hyena's collar data. We've removed 251 snares in total, by following the hyena's movements.

Our second collar gave issues, but have been replaced and will be deployed soon.

We deployed cameras at other hyena dens and we are monitoring them for snares and suitable candidates to collar in future.

Thank you for your continued support and making this project possible.
