November 2025 Update

Collared Female Spotted Hyena
Collared Female Spotted Hyena

Dear donors,

We have raised a total of $8592.09 of our $16,000.00 goal through grants, GlobalGiving donations and private donations. We have purchased two research collars and will be ordering another collar soon.

In December 2024 we collared our first adult female Spotted Hyena.

In August 2025 we collared our second adult female Spotted Hyena.

Data gathered from the two spotted hyenas since we started:

  1. The one female covered 487.44km and the second female 477,35km in 60 days, walking +/- 8km per night. They traverse over seven properties and have a territory of roughly 6000 hectares. Their
core home range covers an area of about 1200 hectares. We have determined where their den sites are and have installed trail cameras to monitor them, their cubs and the rest of their clan to check for any snares or snare related injuries popping up.
  2. Through following up on her collar data we have discovered multiple carcasses of wild animals killed in snares including that of two lions, three waterbuck, buffalo cow, kudu, a white-backed vulture and multiple impala. We have found the area where lions and wild dogs were trapped in snares, but managed to break free. Two wild dogs and two lions were darted and snares removed from them, we assisted with removing the snare from one of the wild dogs.
  3. We have discovered and destroyed two very active poacher's camps after they visited the camps to scavenge on the remains of the poacher's victims.
  4. We removed 189 poachers snares after following up on the hyena's collar data. We've removed 351 snares in total, by following the hyena's movements.

We will be purchasing a third collar to replace the first one when it start to show signs of having low battery levels.

Thank you for your continued support and making this project possible.
