How You Supported People in Kharkiv through Winter

By Leonie Ruesch | Program Manager

The past winters have demonstrated a significant increase in the need for humanitarian aid during the colder months. Factors such as higher calorie requirements, rising food prices, and increased expenses for electricity and heating have left more people vulnerable to food insecurity and reliant on assistance. Thanks to your support, we implemented several measures to address these urgent needs quickly and effectively:

Firewood for rural households
We provided 100 households with sufficient firewood (5 m3/household) to heat their homes and prepare hot meals during the winter months. This measure was aimed at vulnerable households in a rural community in the Kharkiv region. It ensured that families in these vulnerable areas had the necessary means to maintain body temperature, prepare hot meals and maintain a basic standard of living during the harsh winter months.

Emergency Supplies for Internally Displaced Persons
In order to meet the increased need for humanitarian aid in the form of food, we provided 780 newly evacuated people from Kupiansk with food parcels. Additionally, we supplied 300 newly evacuated people from Vovchansk with food parcels and relief supplies to maintain their body temperature (sleeping bags, woollen blankets, etc).

Mobile Soup Kitchens
To mitigate risks associated with war-induced energy shortages, we planned mobile soup kitchens for the winter of 2024/2025. These were designed to provide warm meals during prolonged power outages (5+ hours), particularly benefiting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those requiring care. Although UN forecasts anticipated power cuts of up to 18 hours, Kharkiv experienced fewer outages than expected. Consequently, the soup kitchens did not need to be deployed.

As winter is coming to an end, we will continue to provide affected people with tailor-made support. Thank you for your continued support in making these life-saving measures possible.
