When Edward Teddy came into my care over a year ago, I noticed his one leg was dangling and instantly knew it was broken. Xrays confirmed it. A long road to recovery started and he had an operation to place pins in his broken leg.
Unfortunately what sometimes happen is the tissue around the bone forms a thick layer and to remove this would aggravate it more and cause it to become worse. We did a lot of physiotherapy when he was younger during bottle feeds but he is a bigger boy now and living outside so I can't pick him up anymore to do exercises. He is becoming wilder too.
What we want to see with x-rays at intervals is if the leg is growing at all. It is slightly shorter than the other back leg but if it's growing it means the growth plate is still intact.
We will do another set of x-rays soon and will be able to compare with these that were taken in February.
Eddie is the impetus I needed to start this Sanctuary Fund. It's for him but also for wombats like him. Those who need a safer space to adjust maybe a little bit longer before they are fully released.
It is the dream to buy this piece of land and have it under a conservation agreement in perpetuity so that it can never not be a sanctuary and always be dedicated to wildlife.
Thank you to every one who has made a contribution. It touches me deeply to see how many people from all over the world are enamoured by our amazing wombats.
