Empowering women through a combination of channels

By Lucas Akol | Project Leader

According to the UNDP, gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a pre-condition for sustainable development. For social, economic and environmental sustainability to prevail women and girls need to be provided with:

  • Quality education;
  • Health care;
  • Decent work;
  • Access and ownership rights over property and technology; and
  • Equal participation in political and economic decision-making processes

We have trained 18 women and 13 men aimed at improving access to financial services for women and equipping them with skills for enterprise growth, value addition and marketing of their products and services.

Addressign the following challenges women face in undertaking economically viable enterprises including

  1. the limited access to affordable credit,
  2. limited technical knowledge and skills for business development,
  3. limited access to markets as well as information regarding business opportunities.

This should be increasing participation of women in business development, increase their incomes, livelihood security and overall quality of life in a long run,

Families are being forced to the very edge of survival. In parts of Uganda extreme poverty caused by, climate change and economic instability is putting families at risk.

Your Women’s Empowerment Gift helps set up women-led savings and loans groups to support local women to set up their own businesses, providing an income to buy food, shelter and safety…

Currently with your gift Savings and loans: 63 women in got access to loans not available through commercial lenders in 2021.

Support groups: We established 24 support groups to support 239 survivors of violence in 2021.

Counselling: 122 women survivors of violence in Uganda underwent counselling in 2021.

The program supports women: -

  • To build leadership skills
  • Gender equality in decision making
  • protect women from violence
  • Working with women and men to change attitudes

With the program engaging young people (15-25 years), their youth leaders and volunteers through a process of interaction, reflection and action.

Participants are supported to make connections between their own lives and international social justice issues, and be empowered to make a positive difference in the world.

SCOEN also supports educators to increase their understanding of, and confidence in, delivering development education in their practice. We facilitate workshops and courses with youth workers and leaders in the youth sector. Using active learning methodologies, we will demonstrate creative ways to explore global justice issues with your groups.

Women and girls around the world and Uganda in particular should have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives. They should be free from the threat of violence. Thanks to your support, SCOEN’s Women’s Empowerment programme intends to supports 3000 women across the Uganda. The programme aims to support them to have power and a voice. To recover from violence.
