Help 2000 tribal families fight hunger, Rajasthan

By Nisha | Project Leader

Dear Global Givers,

We are pleased to share an update on the progress of the Smart Kitchen Garden initiative, which has been a significant source of income for tribal farmers in Rajasthan over the last quarter..

The Smart Kitchens initiative has made a profound difference in the lives of women farmers in rural Rajasthan, providing them with organic kitchen gardens to promote food security, improve health, and offer economic relief. By empowering these families with the tools to grow their own vegetables, we aim to reduce their dependence on chemically grown produce, which is often expensive and detrimental to health.

Project Impact
1. Resilience Amid Climate Challenges:
During this quarter, Rajasthan experienced unexpected heavy rainfall, disrupting the availability of organic vegetables in local markets. As a result, chemically-grown vegetables, supplied primarily by large-scale landowners, dominated the market at nearly double the usual cost. Families with smart kitchens, however, remained unaffected by this scarcity and price surge. For instance, Sonam Devi benefited significantly from her smart kitchen garden. After forming a Self-Help Group named "Lakshmi" with the support of iPartner India, Sonam set up her garden on a vacant plot next to her house. Thanks to her kitchen garden, her family now enjoys a steady supply of fresh, affordable, organic produce, shielding them from the financial and health costs associated with chemically-grown alternatives.

2. Health and Nutrition Benefits:
Monthly meetings with the women farmers revealed significant positive changes in their families’ health. Increased energy levels and fewer reports of weakness were attributed to the fresh, organic vegetables from the kitchen gardens. Children particularly enjoyed the taste of the organic vegetables, which encouraged healthy eating habits within households. Sonam shared that her family no longer needs to buy high-priced vegetables from the market, which has provided them with financial relief and access to fresh, chemical-free, highly nutritious vegetables. This organic produce has proven essential in supporting the overall well-being of these families, making nutritious, chemical-free meals a daily reality.

3. Economic Relief:
With the kitchen gardens fully operational by August, each family saved approximately $1 to $3 daily on vegetable purchases, amounting to $7 to $20 per month. Sonam reported saving between $90 to $105 each month since establishing her garden. This economic relief has provided some financial flexibility, reducing the burden of inflated vegetable prices in the market and allowing families to allocate resources to other essential needs.

Through your support, the establishment of these kitchen gardens has enabled iPartner India to build trust with the community, offering a safe and supportive space for engagement.

Despite the challenges such as unexpected heavy rainfall and extreme temperatures, which reached up to 50°C (122°F), the resilience of the women farmers and our team’s adaptability ensured that kitchen gardens were established on schedule. The heavy rains initially slowed seed distribution and delayed production timelines. However, the commitment of the farmers and the implementation of drip irrigation systems helped mitigate these issues. The team has also made plans to support families in selling surplus produce in the winter season, creating an opportunity for additional income generation.

As winter approaches, we are preparing for families to sell surplus produce, which will further supplement household income and support local food security. We extend our gratitude to all supporters of this initiative. Your contributions have empowered these women farmers to overcome economic and environmental challenges, nurture healthier families, and become agents of change within their communities.

Thank you for helping us create lasting change.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Team iPartner India
