Sudan Emergency Fund : Final Report

By Mastora Bakhiet | Executive Director

Darfur Women Network Final Report
Sudan Emergency Fund-GlobalGiving
Location: Farms & Zamzam Camp, El Fasher, Sudan
Date: December 18, 2024

We reflect on the resilience of Sudanese families displaced by relentless conflict. Forced from their homes, they endure unimaginable hardships—hunger, thirst, cold, and despair.

Meet Nadia, a Mother from Darfur:

"My name is Nadia, and I am from El Fasher, El Gadie neighborhood. I was displaced twice—first to the market and then to a farm, where my children and I now seek refuge under a tree due to relentless drones and ground attacks. Life here is unimaginably hard. I am a mother of four, including one child with a disability. Before Darfur Women Network and GlobalGiving reached out to us, we had no choice but to eat Umbaz—a byproduct of peanut oil production, typically used as animal feed—just to survive.

I never expected to receive food, milk, and drinking water. Your support has been a miracle for my family and me. Now, we have life-saving essentials that give us hope. Still, we sleep on the cold, bare ground with only a thin mat. Winter has arrived, and we have no blankets or other necessities.

I am far from my family and have no one to rely on. Despite these ongoing challenges, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Darfur Women Network and GlobalGiving for your compassion and generosity. You have brought light to a very dark time in our lives. Thank you for giving us hope."

Your Impact So Far

Thanks to your generosity:

  • 3,336 families received vital food aid.
  • 282 children under two years old provided with life-saving milk powder.
  • 900 families gained access to clean drinking water.

Total Beneficiaries: 3,886 families and 282 childrenThe Growing Need

Hundreds of thousands remain displaced, enduring hunger, cold, and illness. The Darfur Women Network (DWN), in partnership with GlobalGiving, is working tirelessly to reach survivors of the Darfur genocide residing in the Zamzam displaced persons camp and newly displaced civilians from South, West, and Central Sudan.

Crisis in RSF-Controlled Regions

The situation remains dire as the Rapid Support Force (RSF) intensifies attacks, forcing civilians to flee under harrowing conditions. Hospitals are destroyed, food supplies scarce, and water sources contaminated. Displaced families often rely on ponds shared with animals, leading to widespread waterborne illnesses.

DWN’s Relief Efforts

Despite these challenges, DWN’s courageous teams continue to deliver essential aid:

Effectiveness of Our Team

Our team has demonstrated exceptional effectiveness, navigating risks, managing resources wisely, and ensuring the safe delivery of services. We have adapted to unpredictable conditions, maintained communication with local partners, and prioritized the safety of our volunteers and beneficiaries. This commitment has enabled us to achieve meaningful impact while mitigating potential risks.

Notes and Challenges

  1. Price Increase:

o   Due to the lack of food supplies in El Fasher, materials were purchased from Tawila city (20 miles away). Security issues and logistics have contributed to higher costs.

  1. Impact:

o   Stage 1: 936 families supported

o   Stages 2 & 3: 1,400 families (700 per stage) supported

o   Meals: 2 meals benefiting 500 families per meal

o   Water: 3 tankers serving 900 families

o   Total Beneficiaries: 4,236 families and 282 children

  1. Future Recommendations:

o   Enhanced logistics planning

o   Collaboration with local suppliers to stabilize food prices

o   Additional funding appeals to sustain further stages

Challenges and Immediate Needs

  • Winter Preparedness: Families urgently need blankets and mats to survive the cold nights.
  • Access to Clean Water: Additional water containers and filtration systems are critical.
  • Sustained Food Supplies: High food prices and limited availability threaten the survival of displaced families. They eat an animal food.

Acknowledgment of GlobalGiving’s Role

The Darfur Women Network expresses its heartfelt gratitude to GlobalGiving for being an unwavering partner in supporting desperate displaced families to survive. GlobalGiving’s contributions have enabled us to provide food, water, and essential supplies, making a life-changing difference in the lives of thousands. Their visible presence in Zamzam Camp and the farmlands has brought hope and a renewed sense of community.

Message of Gratitude from Displaced Communities

The displaced people collectively express their deep gratitude to GlobalGiving and all its donors. They recognize the critical role of this partnership in alleviating their suffering and restoring their dignity. With your continued support, they hope to overcome these challenges and build a brighter future.

Sustaining the Partnership

Displaced individuals cherish GlobalGiving’s contributions and dream of continued assistance to meet their urgent needs. Their hope is to see this support sustain their fight for survival, empowering them to restore their livelihoods, educate their children, and rebuild their communities for a brighter future.

Action call

We call on GlobalGiving and our supporters to continue standing with displaced families. Your contributions make a profound difference, providing essential aid and hope for a better future. Together, we can help displaced to survive, recover, and to rebuild their lives with dignity, resilience, and optimism.
