UpdateFrom Survival to Recovery: Investing in the Strength of El Fasher Survivors
Darfur Women Network (DWN) is deeply grateful to our donors, GlobalGiving, and all our partners and supporters for believing in the strength and dignity of survivors of war and genocide in Sudan.
We are excited to announce the beginning of DWN’s Community-Led Recovery Program.
The women and families we are reaching are not experiencing displacement for the first time. Many have been displaced repeatedly—from their homes in Darfur to Zamzam Camp seeking safety, then forced to flee again by ground attacks, drone strikes, siege, hunger, and violence in and around El Fasher.
They endured hunger and thirst, witnessed horrific violence, and lived through a devastating siege. With little protection and nowhere safe to turn, they were forced to undertake one of the most dangerous journeys of their lives. Some walked for weeks with their children, carrying almost nothing except exhausted and weakened bodies, until they finally reached Omdurman.
Yet they survived—and they are determined to rebuild.
Beginning the Recovery Journey
Following our lifesaving humanitarian response, DWN has completed the first stage of recovery: individual, face-to-face livelihood and needs assessments with the first 23 displaced families from El Fasher.
Most are women-led households. Despite losing homes, livelihoods, family members, and everything they once depended upon, these women are already working to support their children. Some sell coffee, food, vegetables, or drinks. Others are trying to work without the basic tools and equipment they need.
Many begin each morning by borrowing supplies and repay the cost at the end of the day, leaving very little to feed their families.
They do not lack courage, skills, or willingness to work. They lack the initial investment needed to break the cycle of daily borrowing.
Based on each family's skills, existing livelihood, needs, and goals, DWN has developed individualized recovery plans.
We are now beginning Stage One: providing 50% of each approved recovery investment through tools, equipment, materials, supplies, and essential work-related costs.
Approximately 14 days later, DWN will conduct face-to-face verification and mentoring visits to assess progress, income, use of the investment, challenges, and reduction in daily borrowing. Participants demonstrating appropriate use and progress will be eligible for the remaining 50% of their approved investment.
Our pathway is:
Lifesaving Assistance → Recovery Investment → Sustainable Livelihoods → Self-Reliance → Community Resilience
This is more than distributing assistance. It is an investment in the strength, skills, dignity, and future of survivors.
We will share another update following the 14-day verification stage, including progress, challenges, and lessons learned.
