Girls Soccer Comes to Kaolack!

Ladies’ Turn has been busy this past fall from August through December bringing girls’ soccer to middle schools in Kaolack. It’s a continuation of the work we did with Plan International in Thies in 2022. Based on the success of that work, Plan International with support from Plan Belgium and in collaboration with the local school system asked us to set up activities in Kaolack and we thank them for their continued partnership!

Since we worked with teachers where coaching is not their main role, we trained them in the fundamentals of how to coach soccer. Then, we created school teams with 100 girls and 25 boys from 5 different middle schools in Kaolack. We decided to integrate a limited number of boys into our activities because we think this is important for generational change. We want to normalize girls playing soccer. These boys will grow up having the experience of playing with girls and know it’s something that can be done.

To play soccer of course means practice, practice, practice! We organized 7 soccer clinics on Saturdays so that the girls could do drills on the basics of soccer like dribbling and passing. Soccer of course also means the thrill of games! The girls’ teams also competed in 6 mini soccer tournaments (or “soccer festivals”) and had a blast playing together and getting their first dose of competition. We just finished organizing the final mini soccer tournament on December 18, 2024.

Please consider making a donation to give more girls the chance to play in 2025!

And of course a HUGE thank you for continuing to support us through all these years. 2024 was a great year with our programs at girls’ elementary schools in Yoff in Dakar and this expansion to Kaolack. We’re looking forward to more girls’ soccer in 2025!

Happy New Year from Ladies’ Turn!

Nio far, in Solidarity,

Jennifer and the Ladies' Turn Team
