For many rural women in Faisalabad, limited income opportunities make it difficult to support their families. Through AWARD Pakistan’s Women’s Vegetable Farms Initiative, women are gaining the skills, resources, and confidence needed to build sustainable livelihoods through organic vegetable farming.
One of these women is Shazia, a mother of three who dreamed of earning an income while providing a better future for her children. With the support of a small revolving loan from the initiative, she leased one acre of land and began growing seasonal vegetables. During the current season, she cultivates spinach, coriander, radish, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, and turnips, while preparing part of her land for summer vegetables, including cucumber, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, and okra.
Although starting her own farm was challenging, the training and guidance provided through the project helped Shazia improve her farming techniques and manage her crops more effectively. As her vegetables became known for their freshness and organic quality, she began attracting regular customers from nearby markets.
Today, the income from her vegetable farm helps cover household expenses and supports her children's education. Beyond the financial benefits, the experience has given Shazia greater confidence and a stronger voice within her family and community. She now encourages other women in her village to explore vegetable farming as a way to improve their lives.
Shazia’s story is inspiring other women to believe that they, too, can build successful livelihoods through sustainable agriculture. As interest in organic kitchen gardening and small-scale vegetable farming continues to grow, more women are stepping forward to join the initiative and create opportunities for themselves and their families.
Through the continued support of GlobalGiving donors and the dedicated efforts of AWARD Pakistan, the Women’s Vegetable Farms Initiative is reaching more rural communities, equipping women with the knowledge, financial support, and practical skills they need to achieve lasting economic independence.
Every seed planted represents more than a harvest; it represents confidence, resilience, and the hope of a brighter future for rural women and their families.
