The Pangolin

By Rosa Wortelboer | Fundraising officer

Pangolin Amba
Pangolin Amba

Imagine this: a small, innocent animal is torn from the jungle. Terrified, it curls up inside its armor of scales — its only protection. But for poachers, that armor is precisely the prize.
The animal is brutally beaten and boiled for its scales. Just to sell them. Just for money.

The victim is the pangolin: the most illegally traded mammal in the world.

Every year, thousands (!!) of pangolins are stolen from the jungle. Their scales are sometimes made into jewelry or sold as a delicacy. But they are mainly used as traditional medicine for illnesses such as rheumatism — despite there being no scientific evidence whatsoever that this works.

Because of poaching, all eight species of pangolins are on the Red List of critically endangered species. Three of them are even on the brink of extinction. Time is running out.

If we do not act now, this extraordinary animal may soon be gone forever. And yet, there is hope.
August 2025, our partner organization JAAN in Indonesia carried out a raid together with the authorities on a poacher. Among 80 kilos of scales, they found one living animal. He was in very poor condition, but thankfully still breathing. He was given the name Amba.

Amba immediately received medical care at our rescue center — successfully. He is eating well again and makes soft snuffling sounds as he enthusiastically digs holes in the sand. His recovery is going so well that we hope to release him soon into a protected area, where the chances of him being captured again are small.

Amba proves that rescue is possible. But sadly, for now, he is still the exception.

For every Amba we save, far too many other pangolins still die. Suffocated in crates. Hidden in bags. Transported as if their lives are worth nothing. That is why, in Indonesia, we have launched a project together with JAAN to stop poachers and save animals. The project focuses primarily on the species most at risk of extinction: the Sunda pangolin.

Will you help make a difference? Together with you, we can ensure that pangolins are no longer victims of human greed.

With your support, we can:
• track down and help arrest poachers and traders in Indonesia.
• deploy sniffer dogs to detect smuggling.
• demand stricter penalties.
• rescue animals like Amba, care for them, and release them back into protected areas — far away from poachers.

Your donation can make the difference for a pangolin like Amba between a cruel death and a free future in the jungle.
Will you join us? I sincerely hope so.

Thank you for your help!
