Challenge

People living with cancer don't always feel heard, seen, or understood. They might feel alienated and voiceless at a time when they're also learning to navigate an unfamiliar health system, not to mention dealing with the emotional highs and lows of cancer diagnosis, treatment, or recovery. Traditional care models often centre on hospitals, isolated treatments, and specific disease management and overlook the broader context of peoples' lives and experiences.

Solution

A people-centred approach to cancer care that fully integrates each individual's unique needs, with compassion and empathy, leads to the best health outcomes. People-centred care is intended to deepen the connection not only between healthcare providers and patients but with whole communities. Your contribution supports the WCD campaign and benefits patient-driven organisations via UICC's Patient Group Mentoring Programme aimed at engaging people with lived experience as essential partners.

Long-Term Impact

The 3-year World Cancer Day campaign focused on people-centred cancer care is a powerful way to drive meaningful and lasting improvements in cancer treatment and support. We aim to raise awareness of the need for holistic, people-centred care that looks beyond the disease to see the person behind the diagnosis. Like all UICC programmes, the campaign is not just about temporary change but about building momentum for a long-term shift in the way cancer care is approached.
