Winter Learning Journey and March NY Fundraising

By Mio Yamamoto | Executive Director

Dear GlobalGiving Donors,

We hope everyone’s New Year is off to a great start! It was a particularly eventful month for WIT in January, including our first Speaker Series event with guest speaker, Peter M. Jennings, President of Dow Chemical Japan/Korea. This was a wonderful way to kick off 2017, where business professionals interested in Board & Governance, Leadership, and Ethics and Compliance gathered to hear more about Peter’s experience and how Dow Chemical Japan values effective governance.

We also recently held our 6th Winter Learning Journey in Akiu, a small town in Miyagi Prefecture (half an hour from Sendai City). This two-day Learning Journey convened 10 different social ventures from the Tohoku region and focused primarily on defining each organization’s endgame and business model. Participants engaged in a lot of deep discussions through means of stakeholder mapping (e.g. identifying allies, competitors, power players, etc. in the field) and lectures on different business models and endgame options for organizations. In the evening, participants and WIT members enjoyed a field visit to the local Akiu Winery (http://akiuwinery.co.jp/) and listened to the founder’s vision for the winery and collaborations made with other organizations, especially in an effort to revitalize the broader community and to share the treasures of local produce at the global level.

This cross-border vision is not only one of WIT’s, but also of the entrepreneurs we support. As such, we will be holding a fundraising event in March in New York City, featuring an entrepreneur from Fukushima Prefecture, who is aiming to create a sustainable economy and society through the promotion of Japan’s long-standing tradition of Urushi (Japanese lacquerware), and show the world the beauty of Urushi. (https://www.urushirocks.com/) The purpose of the fundraising event is to also commemorate the sixth year since the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you at one of our events this year!

Warmly,

WIT Members
