Happy Summer Everyone!
In Heaven Through the Backdoor, Yo tells us stories of the formative events of her life. Many of these stories involve travel and major life transitions. I recently saw an excellent documentary about the Russian political dissident Alexis Navalny. There is a scene in the film where he and his family are planning to travel, and they sit for a minute or so, on their bed by their suitcases. They briefly discussed this Russian tradition and this sit before travel concept intrigued me. A moment of quiet reflection before a journey seems to make perfect sense, but I’ve never done it myself or seen anyone do it.
I recently went on an epic road trip with my family. I had a strong desire to make all of us sit in our yard before leaving. The kids were already in the car, eager to get on the road, so I dismissed this urge took a photo of the yard, and hopped in.
Seeing that this tradition existed has been an inspiration to start this 'sit before travel' with my own family. A bit of research into its origins revealed the idea was based on tricking bad house spirits into not following you on the road; a more modern take is to allow a bit of calm before the chaos of travel. Either way, I look forward to implementing this idea for future journeys.
With Gratitude,
Anna
