As a supporter of our ongoing work in Ukraine, we want to give you an update on how the work has changed in the past several months- and really focus in on our response to the Kahkovka dam breach in early June.
As you know, the conflict in Ukraine has been going on for 15 months, with missile and artillery strikes and shelling intensifying across Ukraine over the past two months. The ongoing attack has caused wide-scale damage to infrastructure and displaced thousands of civilians.
On June 6th, the dam of Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant was breached and subsequently destroyed. The resulting flooding affected over 17,000 riverside communities. The breach has been the most significant incident of damage to civilian infrastructure since the start of the conflict in Ukraine and poses grave and far-reaching consequences for thousands of people in southern Ukraine
Flooding from the dam breach has destroyed thousands of acres of agricultural land, crops, and irrigation systems. Food production and supply lines have already been disrupted by the ongoing conflict, leaving one in three families in Ukraine without access to food, and this flooding makes the situation even worse. Access to drinking water remains one of the main concenrs as the dam supplied water to over 700,000 people in southern Ukraine. At least 1.4 million people in Ukraine are currently without access to safe water. Over 20 hazardous industrial facilities are in areas with heightened risk of flooding, which causes tremendous challenges for civilians living in the area and for humanitarian workers carrying out relief work in the area.
ActionAid is working alongside four partners to respond to the immediate needs and ensure the safety of the affected communities over the next three months. Our response will provide support to 5,000 vulnerable individuals most affected by the flooding. This support includes:
