Youth Impact: New Year, New Opportunities

By Katie Gray | Program Coordinator

Our Youth Impact Group is made up of high school students from international schools and leads the way by taking leadership roles in community projects and initiating creative and impactful activities.

Youth Impact Group leaders, made up members elected by the group, demonstrate responsibility by designing and managing their own projects. Their youth-led initiatives showcase their dedication to addressing societal needs while fostering teamwork, leadership, and a strong sense of community.

Youth Impact Group Projects

Recently the group has been engaging with the Sophia University Refugee Café. The “café” is a place for refugees from various countries living in Japan to find community and support. Participants talk, play games, and share stories to form genuine friendships and camaraderie.

Through this project, the group is aiming to engage further with vulnerable populations through care package deliveries, support groups, and classes.

In addition to their original projects, the Youth Impact Group actively contributes to Hands On Tokyo's signature programs, including:

  • Fun with English Program: Teaching English to individuals with Down Syndrome, helping improve communication skills while promoting inclusion and understanding.
  • Diversity Recreation Experience: Participating in activities led by a blind Paralympian designed to foster teamwork and communication, and teach volunteers how to support athletes for a more inclusive environment where adaptive sports thrive.

April was Global Volunteer Month, and the students had opportunities to reflect on their reason for joining Youth Impact Group.

“I initially joined Youth Impact to experience making a meaningful difference in local communities. As someone new to volunteering, I saw that joining Youth Impact would be a great opportunity to gain experience and get involved. Looking back, I’m grateful I joined this group—being part of Youth Impact allowed me to participate in various volunteer activities, broaden my perspective, and build valuable connections.”

“I joined Youth Impact because I want to be part of something bigger than myself—something that empowers young people like me to speak up, take action, and make real change. As an immigrant living in Japan, I’ve been passionate about representation, equity, and helping others navigate their own paths. Whether it’s through leading in school, giving speeches, or planning a podcast for immigrant youth, I’ve always believed in using my voice for impact. Youth Impact felt like the right space to grow, connect with driven peers, and turn my experiences into something meaningful for others”

We are immensely proud of the Youth Program at Hands On Tokyo and the exceptional efforts of the Youth Impact Group. Their ability to lead projects, manage responsibilities, and develop new initiatives demonstrates their dedication to building a better community for all.

We are deeply grateful for the continued support from our partners, donors, and community members, which enables us to nurture the next generation of changemakers. Together, we look forward to expanding our efforts and making an even greater impact in the future.
