Menstrual Health Education for Tanzanian students

Lominioni Secondary School is a rural pastoralist community school located approximately 50 km from Arusha town. The school serves both girls and boys, with some students living at home and others staying at school.

For girls, access to sanitary pads remains a significant challenge, particularly during menstruation. Limited access to appropriate menstrual hygiene products can cause discomfort, embarrassment, and difficulty concentrating on their studies.

With the generous support of our donors, 180 girls received menstrual health education and reusable sanitary pads and few placed at school office for more students. The training focused on three key areas:

1. Health and Personal Development The girls gained knowledge about personal health, education, self-confidence, and making positive choices during adolescence.

2. Sexual and Reproductive Health Participants learned about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), early pregnancy, prevention, and the importance of making informed and responsible decisions.

3. Menstrual Hygiene Management The girls received practical guidance on menstrual hygiene, including how to manage their periods safely and confidently while maintaining dignity at school and at home.

Reusable Sanitary Pads and Practical Demonstration Following the training, 180 girls received reusable sanitary pads.

A practical demonstration was also conducted to show the girls how to properly use, wash, dry, and safely store the pads for continued use.

Impact

The training was a meaningful success. By combining health education with practical menstrual hygiene support, the program helped girls gain knowledge, confidence, and access to essential menstrual products. This support can help reduce discomfort and absenteeism during menstruation and enable girls to participate more confidently in their education.
