One Borehole Can Change a Community

Dear Donors,

Water is something a family needs every single day.

It is needed for drinking, cooking, washing, bathing and caring for children. Yet for families in Ogane community, getting water can mean travelling away from home and relying on sources that may not be safe.

This is what Drill One Borehole to Give a Community Safe Water hopes to change.

Our goal is very specific: drill one borehole that can provide safe drinking water for about 5,000 people in Ogane.

Across Nigeria, access to safe water remains a serious problem. UNICEF data shows that only about 30% of the population uses safely managed drinking-water services. Unsafe water and poor sanitation also expose families to diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases.

The burden of finding water also falls heavily on women and girls. UNICEF reported in March 2026 that women and girls aged 15 and above are more likely than men and boys to be responsible for collecting drinking water in Nigerian households.

For children, time spent fetching water can also mean less time for school, rest and play.

Our planned borehole will use a solar-powered pump to bring groundwater into a storage tank and public collection taps. Using solar power means the system will not depend on regular electricity or fuel to pump water.

Before the water is opened for community use, it will be tested to confirm that it is safe for drinking.

We also want the borehole to continue working long after construction is finished. Community members will therefore be involved in caring for the facility and keeping the surroundings clean. Local responsibility for maintenance matters because a borehole only serves people while it remains functional.

We sincerely thank our first donor for supporting this project. We also thank our partners, volunteers and the people of Ogane for believing that their community can have a safer source of water.

If this project speaks to you, please share it with your friends, family and on social media. You can also become an individual fundraiser on GlobalGiving and invite people in your network to help bring safe water closer to families in Ogane.

We look forward to the update when we can show you the drilling, installation, water testing and, finally, families collecting water from their own community borehole.

One borehole may look like a small project. For 5,000 people who need water every day, it can become part of everyday life for years to come.

With gratitude,
Adaego Imoh
