Dear friends,
Thank you very much for extending support to our child D. We raised $400 towards D's living and education-related expenses. Out of $400, $ 180 were spent on her food, $50 on her clothing, $60 on her personal expenses like face powder, soaps etc and $100 on her studies - books and school bag et al. $ 10 were spent on her health.
We would like to share her story in this report.
D comes from a very poor family which consists of 5 children - 1 boy and 4 girls. The father is a mason who also suffers from Tuberculosis. He keeps ill most of the time and does not go to work and earn enough. D's mother is a Beedi worker and she also suffers from TB. To take care of the family, two girl children stopped studying and started working on farms.
Seeing D's plight at home, her maternal Uncle brought her to Sphoorti.
Her story is of courage, determination and the will to do well In life in whatever situation one is placed in. She is an inspiration for privileged children who take a lot of things for granted in their lives.
Background of the child
D (15) hails from a village called Nellikondi in Mahboobnagar distict. Her mother S is a beedi worker and father P is a mason. Both parents are TB affected.
D came to Sphoorti in 2007. She was born in Jan 2002. She has two elder sisters and one elder brother Pr (19 years) who also stays at Sphoorti.
She recently passed STD X examinations with a GPA of 7.8.
The Change
When P joined Sphoorti, her health was in a bad shape. She was from a slum neighborhood. Her behavior and habits were subpar. Years of malnutrition took toll on her health. Her teeth were in a disarray. We took help of local physicians to improve her health. It took us 2 years to bring D to good health.
After a few years of staying at Sphoorti, D began to mix up well with other inmates. She has also been a consistent dancer in most of our cultural events at and outside Sphoorti.
D wants to study Commerce and take up a job in Bank when she grows up. She says that she feels very safe and happy to be with her friends and staff members.
The Conclusion
D's story is one of grit and courage and love for life. Sphoorti feels privileged to have helped her find her purpose in life.
The staff members have to be particularly commended for their commitment and hard work in dealing with children like D.
Her good performance in STD X gives us hope that she will do well in her further studies.
Over the last eleven years, the collaboration of our donors, well-wishers and other stake-holders has helped us provide a safe and secure childhood with facilities on par with those of a middle class family.
Through your support, we can help more children like Madhuri to become able citizens of India.
