Women’s Resource Center (WRC), in partnership with dedicated supporters, provided vital assistance and creates safe spaces within refugee camps. These spaces are designed for displaced people especially women, pregnant women, mothers with new born babies, and children to come together, share their personal stories, discuss life challenges, exchange information, and find empowerment.
By fostering dialogue and mutual support, WRC helped in restore hope and resilience, especially during times of extreme stress such as war.
Recognizing these urgent needs, the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) stepped in to provide immediate relief through assessing the needs from people directly, the collaboration with the local authorities, and supporters. Emergency food packages, hygiene supplies, and other materials to assist emergency relief that addressed both physical and psychological needs.
This holistic response aims to restore dignity, safeguard health, and offer hope to people especially mothers and children navigating the harsh realities of burden.
WRC developed a short “Empowerment Program” guideline for emotional support because through the visits to assess the real situation, people need more than food. And this will be distributed to ensure that women and children receive not only physical assistance but also psychological care. Specifically psychosocial assistance to strengthen mothers’ capacity to care for themselves and their newborns, children, and families.
We conducted the program in 4 locations in Sangkat (commune): Sangkat Kok Chork, Sangkat Salakamroek, Sangkat Svay Dangkum, and Khnat Commune.
Distributed emergency food packages and hygiene supplies to 48 families which equal 203 people. In those families are 8 pregnant women, 11 elder people, 4 people in disability, and 3 mothers with new born babies.
We also enhanced community resilience by providing vegetable seeds to families through coordinated government efforts; and delivered Empowerment Program sessions to 4 groups in 2 locations; Sangkat Kok Chork and Sangkat Salakamroek with 66 adults (21 are men).
WRC created a safe space for 66 children to play, learn, and release stress with physical activity like playing ball, games and reading with our mobile library.
Providing emergency response, shortterm support often provides immediate relief but can leave gaps once external actors depart and communities may receive food, hygiene supplies, or psychosocial assistance for a limited period. But this is a critical lesson is that emergency support must be paired with strategies for sustainability such as local capacity building, clear handover processes, and integration with longerterm recovery efforts. This ensures that urgent aid not only addresses immediate survival needs but also strengthens resilience and dignity beyond the crisis.
The Empowerment Program played a vital role by equipping individuals with practical tools to strengthen their emotional wellbeing, develop personal safety plans, and build effective coping strategies. Through this support, participants reported that they feel better, able to navigate challenges, and foster resilience in the face of adversity.
