Summary

It is essential that we tend to the surrounding land in the vicinity where the elephants traverse regularly enroute to the further areas of the reserve. Once we reach our target, we will be able to apply preventative management techniques to the surrounding land to prevent environmental degradation shaped by the elephants. The initial phase is to cover 50 Hectares.

Challenge

It will assist in lessening the environmental impact from the elephants on the land that surrounds the orphanage, and ensure to create microhabitats suitable for germination. During 2020, and the impact from COVID-19, there has been no available funding to tend to the immediate environment which is essential to good elephant and land management. To leave just one year pass without sustaining the lands the elephants traverse, can be detrimental to the environment.

Solution

The project which should take 6 weeks to carry out with techniques such as bush clearing and brush packing will be used to stabilise barren/trampled patches of soil that causes sheet erosion. We will use a tractor to rip the soil and afterwards pack branches tightly interlocked which should generate adequate results. This will provide grass seeds entering from the surrounding environment with a microhabitat suited for germination. In an attempt to speed up the land's rehabilitation process.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact will ensure regeneration of essential elements necessary to make the environment thrive, and in turn all wildlife and elephants too.
