Rural youth prove they have the solutions to their communities' challenges. Students at Amun Shea School developed BioRaiz, a sustainable fertilizer that improves smallholder farmers' productivity and promotes regenerative agriculture. They will train students and teachers in 10 rural public schools, and their research will become part of PEOF's Agroecology and Environmental Sustainability Diploma, benefiting local farmers across Morazan.
In Morazan, smallholder farmers face depleted soils and high fertilizer costs, while rural education often fails to address real community challenges. BioRaiz tackles both issues by providing an affordable, chemical-free fertilizer that improves healthy food production and restores soil. At the same time, students learn through hands-on problem-solving, developing practical skills, leadership, and a stronger commitment to their communities and the future of local agriculture.
Guided by their teacher, 5 students at Amun Shea School will run a research and teaching project for students and local farmers. They will collect forest roots to extract natural fungi and produce BioRaiz using a hand mill. They will share results through workshops in 10 rural schools and school gardens, showing visible plant improvements. Their work will also become part of PEOF's Agroecology Diploma, training farmers to reduce chemical use and improve soil health in Morazan.
Over time, this project can transform Morazan in two ways. Economically and in health, trained farmers and schools can produce food year-round without expensive agrochemicals, improving income, soil health, and children's nutrition through school gardens. Humanly, youth learn science by doing and see real impact from their ideas, reducing migration and inspiring them to stay, teach others, and build local development in Morazan from within their own communities.
