An Overview
With this strange year coming to an end, we thought we would give an overview of all the community based programs that we are currently involved in.
Covid Relief:
With Covid cases declining considerably over the last couple of months, we have kept only 1 (out of the 3) Covid Care Centres running - albeit on a small scale. This was to ensure preparedness if we needed to scale this again quickly, in the event of a third wave. Fortunately, the cases from the last few weeks are still quite low, though with Omicron there is a concern that things could spiral again. We are keeping a close watch.
Our infra projects [the 250 LPM Oxygen Plant, 10-Bed Pediatric ICU at the Anekal Gen Hospital, a 50 LPM O2 Plant at Attibele Public Health Centre, and a 9 Bed Covid Ward at Attibele PHC] are all now operational; at this point, we are not focusing on any new infrastructure projects.
Having completed 15000+ vaccinations across Anekal Taluk, we have slowed down. As per data we have gathered, Anekal has 127% first dose penetration (reflective of the floating / migrant population), and as 74%+ second dose penetration.
Our pilot program to build capacity in a ground force to drive early detection, screening and tele-care for infectious diseases, including Covid - is continuing and we have been refining this based on our experience on the ground.
Moving Ahead: To make our presence as a grass-root NGO more effective, we are adding Public Health as a specific domain to focus on, insofar as Anekal Taluk is concerned. Dr Roopa Devadasan, a very experienced Public Health expert and co-founder of Institute of Public Health has joined our team effective 01 November to lead our Public Health Strategy. We are working with public health experts and defining our plans to focus specifically on Primary Healthcare to marginalized and disadvantaged communities in rural areas.
Education:
With schools almost fully re-opening, our teaching program in the schools has been going on in full swing. There has been a flow of children coming back for offline classes in the rural schools we operate in.
We have been assessing the children to understand their learning levels and the drop in the levels - given that schools have not been open for almost 18 months.
Over the last few months, we have been developing gamified content which is based on our Curriculum; we have just started a pilot program for 500 children where we are complementing our in-class conventional teaching program with this Digitized & Gamified content, delivered over tablets. The hypothesis we are working with is that - this kind of highly integrated model will accelerate learning in children.
At the same time, we have also doubled down on our investment in training our community teachers - in English Proficiency, Pedagogy and Curriculum Mastery.
Community Rehabilitation
Our Community Rehabilitation work with the slum community of Waste Pickers is continuing strongly. Our learning center which covers teaching Foundational Literacy & Numeracy for 45+ children of this community has been strengthened - and we have added Body/Gender sensitivity, Mental Health Counselling, Theatre-based teaching, and Sports-based teaching program to our model.
Our work on Personal & Menstrual Hygiene, and Sexual/Reproductive Health is also taking shape.
Next on the anvil - is a Sanitation program to build toilets for this community.
We of course would not have been able to achieve all this without your support.
