Help create a Billion Literates!

One Billion Literates Foundation (OBLF), as the name suggests, is all about Education. For over a decade, we’ve been helping local communities by training and employing village housewives to teach English language skills to rural children attending Public schools with the vernacular as the medium of instruction.

As mentioned earlier, with the onslaught of Covid, we veered to helping the communities in every which way we could – food, medicines, hygiene, health care, health collaterals etc. This challenge opened our eyes to many distress points in the communities we serve, and what transpired after detailed discussions at all levels, was the fact that we had the capability – and the will – to go beyond Education, and work on other urgent needs of the communities.

As stated in our previous report, OBLF thus started its Public Health Initiative (PHI), with Dr Roopa Devadasan – an expert in this area – to head this Program. She is now joined by an Assistant, Dr Ankita Kar, and Channakeshava, Asst.  Program Manager.   They have been hard at work over the last 3 months to put together a map of the existing health system and health seeking behaviour in Anekal Taluk. Apart from meeting Public Health Officers and visits to all the 13 Public health Centres in Anekal Taluk, they have visited numerous under-privileged communities, to understand the gap between needs and available resources. We now have an excellent picture of the situation on the ground, and have started to put together a draft of what our mission ought to be. The plan is to start our Public Health Initiatives by end-March.
