Summary

In order to improve refugee children social integration opportunities, URDA seeks to establish a Community Center Caravan in Al-Yasmine camp in west Beqaa, Lebanon, that hosts 107 syrian refugee families, 60% of which are children. In this center, 300 children from the refugee and host societies will have access to a wide range of services including vocational training courses, psychosocial counseling and various peaceful coexistence related activities. Challenge

In situations of forced displacement, the ties which hold a community together are often severely weakened or broken. Open and regular interaction between individuals and groups, their shared values and interests, and their means of minimizing disparities and avoiding marginalization, may need to be supported to regenerate during displacement. Tensions within and among displaced communities may arise and quickly escalate.

Solution

Maintaining the social fabric of displaced communities and promoting peaceful coexistence with the host communities can be therefore highly challenging especially in camp settings. Refugees, mainly children refugees, struggle to find safe spaces where they can gather, engage in social activities, use their skills and capacities to express themselves, all of which may limit their ability to live in dignity. These challenges are particularly acute for children with specific needs.

Long-Term Impact

- Peaceful coexistence will be promoted through joint activities where both refugee children and host communities come together. - Empowerment, dignity, and a sense of belonging will be endorsed by initiatives and innovations by refugee children especially in trainings and informal education. - Vulnerable children, particularly those marginalized, at risk, and with disabilities will have access to meaningful activities and events. - Refugee children will have access to informal education.
