Challenge

Since the start of the global pandemic, children have used screens more frequently, resulting in poor vision health. Furthermore, many migrant school teachers and families lack the resources to provide amiable care and support to their children experiencing visual impairment. Most commonly, students have cases of myopia (nearsightedness), which can be treated through prescription eyeglasses and proper eye care. With the aid of eyeglasses, children can control the progression of their m

Solution

This project will work with migrant schools, implementing biannual eye check-ups for migrant children in the 3rd to 5th grades and providing necessary prescription glasses. By involving students, teachers, and parents in these conversations regarding eye health, our program engages and educates necessary parties to ensure the child's visual success.

Long-Term Impact

An estimated 2,000 migrant children will receive eye check-ups, 400 of which will need prescription glasses. Shanghai Roots and Shoots and KidStrong ensure students have the essential tools to participate in class and lead an empowered life. Moreover, eye health is crucial to an individual's overall physical well-being. By normalizing doctor visits and conversations surrounding physical health, these children will learn to advocate for themselves as they grow into young adults.
