A fund to rescue children from slavery in Nepal

Although initially, Nepal was largely unaffected by the Coronavirus, recently came the news that we were dreading. Coronavirus infections in Nepal are starting to rise and just this week 451 new cases have been reported. The government says it expects cases to increase rapidly but many provinces are not prepared. Our staff in Nepal are keeping abreast of all the government directives and ensuring our staff adhere to the guidance provided but we worry greatly for the welfare of those we support. 

Unfortunately, we are not able to undertake rescues until the lock-down situation changes and so we have been forced to call off our observational visits and planned rescues. However, we are committed to taking in children found in danger by the government or other agencies in an emergency and did rescue a 12-year-old boy last week at the request of local police.

Children in our care homes are in good health and continue to be cared for by their dedicated house parents, who are keeping them occupied. They continue on with their studies, preparing for exams, playing indoor games and learning to cook and grow vegetables in the garden. We are eternally grateful to the house parents who are caring for them during such a difficult time. We are also keeping in close touch with those who have returned to their homes and with our young people, supplying them with any emergency supplies they may need.

We are writing to let you know that yesterday, we rescued four very young boys, aged between 12 and 14, from restaurants, sweet shops and a bakery in Kathmandu. 

The rescue was undertaken by our staff team, with support from the local police, municipality representatives and members of the Children Protection Campaign Group. 

Currently, the stories of each of the boys is unclear. They are very scared and so we have so far been unable to gather much detail of where they have come from and how they ended up in these terrible circumstances.  The staff are working hard to ensure that they feel safe and will counsel them over the next few days in the hope that we can learn more. We are waiting on their official documents so we can identify them and contact their families.
