With the current economic crisis in Sri Lanka and high inflation more and more families are cutting down on their meals. Parents find it hard to pack food into their preschooler's lunchbox. In the past several months we have seen children bring less food to their preschool. Since last year World Vision Lanka (WVL) has supported nearly 5000 children across 17 locations in Sri Lanka. WVL is now fundraising to provide a nutritious meal for at least 100 preschool children in Mullaitivu for 6 months.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948. Soaring inflation is devastating thousands of economically vulnerable families who already struggle with extreme poverty and is forcing them to reduce the number of meals they can provide for their children each day.
By offering daily nutrition, we aim to prevent children from experiencing malnutrition, which has unfortunately seen a significant increase in recent years. Furthermore, supplying children with a nutritious meal not only ensures their physical well-being but also enables them to thrive academically and develop into healthy individuals. This provision of a meal also offers financial assistance to the parents of these children.
World Vision's long-term strategy to ensure that vulnerable school-age children receive adequate daily nutrition incorporates a two-pronged approach: World Vision will provide children with daily meals during a transition time of six months. The cost of each meal is 150 rupees (0.53 US cents). During these six months WVL will work with Preschool Management Committees and parents of children to mobilize them to source vegetables and fruits to support meals, in order to ensure sustainability.
