Challenge

The Andean rural communities in the Cotopaxi region are characterized by their geographic isolation and lack of any basic health infrastructure. The small typical "choza" house accommodates up to 5-6 people and farm animals; living, cooking and sleeping all take place in the same room. Simple mud walls and thatched roofs create a really unhealthy living environment where mortal diseases like typhus, cholera and TBC are widespread. We provide these families healthier houses.

Solution

The installation of windows and the use of materials, such as, brick, wood and adobe material allow houses to be more easily heated and more resistant to rain. The creation of a kitchen with ventilation and a latrine contribute to better hygenic and sanitary conditions.

Long-Term Impact

The project will improve the living spaces for about 120 people, creating better hygenic and sanitary conditions and lowering mortal deseases like TBC, flu, thyphus and cholera. In a long term period, the project will be able to create better conditions for child birth, which will lower infant and maternal mortality rates.
