In rural districts of Tamil Nadu, children with developmental disabilities face delayed diagnosis and limited access to therapy due to poverty, stigma, and distance from urban centers. Our project aims to provide early identification, therapy services, parental training, and inclusive education support to special children in underserved villages. Through community-based rehabilitation and mobile outreach, we ensure that children receive consistent care close to their homes.
The Problem
Rural families often travel 40–80 km to district hospitals for speech therapy, physiotherapy, or occupational therapy. Many discontinue treatment due to cost and livelihood pressures.
As a result:
Children miss early intervention windows.
School dropout rates increase among children with disabilities.
Parents feel isolated and unsupported.
Our Solution
We established a rural therapy support model that includes:
Village-Level Screening Camps for early identification
Speech, Occupational & Physiotherapy Services at block level
Parent Training Workshops in Tamil for home-based therapy
Assistive Device Support (communication boards, mobility aids)
School Inclusion Support with teacher orientation
Activities Conducted (Reporting Period)
Conducted developmental screening camps in 12 villages
Provided regular therapy to 35 children
Organized 4 parent counselling and training sessions
Distributed 27 assistive learning and mobility aids
Coordinated with local schools to support inclusive classrooms
One mother shared:
"Earlier we travelled to the city hospital once in two months. Now therapy is available in our block. My child has started speaking simple words."
Challenges
Shortage of qualified rural therapists
Irregular attendance during agricultural seasons
Social stigma in some communities
Limited funds for advanced therapy equipment
How you are supporting GlobalGiving Support??
Funds raised through GlobalGiving enable us to:
Expand therapy outreach to additional villages
Provide subsidized therapy sessions for low-income families
Procure sensory and therapy equipment
Train more community-level facilitators
Support transportation for children with severe disabilities
Every contribution directly supports early intervention and improves long-term outcomes for rural children.
Access to therapy should not depend on geography. With continued support from GlobalGiving donors, we are building an inclusive ecosystem where rural children with disabilities in Tamil Nadu can learn, grow, and participate fully in society.
