Shiba can dream again

By Shabana Shahzad | Head of Communications

Shiba is 21 years old young girl whose dreams were shattered due to loss of her eye sight. Her right eye was severely infected because of wearing low quality contact lenses for long hours and improper maintenance. She felt itching at first then the redness became permanent and eventually the pain became intolerable that she sought professional help.  Her family took her to neighborhood general physician who prescribed some drops. The pain and redness wouldn’t go so her father borrowed some money and took her to an ophthalmologist.  Shiba belongs to an underprivileged family where many necessities were also missing.  Her studies and routine life was utterly disturbed. She was determined to change her family’s future and was working hard to make a difference. She was pursuing her bachelors but due to her eye condition she couldn’t continue her studies.

Seeing his dreams go shattered, while discussing his distress with a neighbor, Shibha’s father got to know about LRBT and its free eye care services.  Upon her arrival at LRBT tertiary eye hospital, Korangi she was sent to cornea department. Her cornea was badly damaged and needed an urgent transplant. Shiba couldn’t believe her ears and in seconds her future seemed darkened and faded like her right eye. She started crying at the clinic. The cornea team and counselor consoled her and explained her the process. To Shiba’s surprise they assured it will be done for free but she will have to wait as there was dearth of corneas and have to be arranged from outside Pakistan through donors.

Shiba’s cornea was arranged through a donor organization and her keratoplasty took place successfully. She is back to her studies and teaches students in her spare time to help fund her studies as well as help her father with home expenses.

Her life is back to colors and the darkness has ended.

Thank you for empowering her and giving her the gift  of sight.
