Our greenhouses in Kenya are doing incredibly well and they are producing tomatoes, peppers and a variety of other vegetables to, not only feed the children in our programs, but also to feed the community in general. We have run into an issue, though - we need a reliable truck to cart the veggies from the farm to the city where the veggies are sold and distributed.
The American Foundation for Children with AIDS supports greenhouse and agricultural projects in Kenya in order to help our partner clinics become self-sustainable. With two greenhouses producing masses of food, we now need a truck to transport the vegetables to the market for sale and also to deliver vegetables to malnourished children who desperately need it. The money earned from market sales will be used to cover clinic costs, allowing the clinic to care for even more children.
The purchase of a good truck will allow this project to grow and to become even more of a success than it is now. The truck will be used to transport vegetables, bringing an income in for the clinic and helping cover costs such as salaries, testing kits, medicine, and counseling for the children we serve. Children who cannot reach the farm in order to obtain their vegetables will be able to pick them up at the clinic once a week when the truck delivers to that location.
The impact of this project is huge! As children eat better food - one that is highly nutritious - their health gets better, their outlook on life is better and their overall being is improved. By allowing the children who need the food the opportunity to get it without having to travel impossible distances, but rather to get it at a clinic they already attend is a big bonus. And, once the clinic is self-sustaining, AFCA can continue our good work in another part of the world.
