This project provides water acces for 45 families in Santa Maria Ostuma, El Salvador. The lack of water in the country mostly affect women in rural areas that usually are responsible for providing water for domestic use, to obtain it, they have to buy it or even walk long distances, reducing their productive time, personal growth and family income. With your help, we will train women to build and install 3 rainwater systems to provide safe water to 150 people, by using an innovate solution.
In El Salvador 1.5 million do not have access to water in their homes, and even those that have the service, are serious deficiencies and water may be missing days or weeks. This situation is even worse in rural communities, where it is not possible to provide water in conventional ways, the lack of water means that women have to spend more time and money to obtain it, restricting their personal and professional development. Therefore, rainwater harvesting is a way to help solve the problem.
The project implements innovative low cost rainwater harvesting system, mainly composed for a geomembrana bag that storage 6,604 gallons of water and combined with a home filter, people can obtain clean water for consumption. The project aimed at women learning to install and maintain the rainwater harvesting system, inviting them to perform a non-traditional role for women in rural communities. 3 systems will be installed that will directly benefit 45 women and 150 persons of their families.
The project will help people to have a source of clean and safe water, reducing the time they invest in obtaining water, as well as economic benefits for investing less money in buying water and even medicines to solve health problems related to consumption of contaminated water. In the long term, it helps to empower women in non-traditional roles such as knowledge in plumbing and to be agents of change in their communities.
