Summary

The project will deliver 2.500 menstrual cups to girls, women of Afro- Colombian women, migrants and adolescents in vulnerable conditions in Colombia. We want to relieve them of the economic burdens caused by having to take care of their menstrual hygiene care during the COVID-19 pandemic and to contribute to their autonomy, offering a more sustainable method. We would like also to help dispel myths and taboos about menstruation.

Challenge

As a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic, access to certain menstrual hygiene items for the most vulnerable sectors has been even more difficult than usual: menstrual cups, sanitary pads and tampons are not considered a priority. According to UNICEF, 20% of the girls in the Colombian Pacific believe menstrual blood to be dirty, adding to the stigmas that are related to menstruation, and ignore proper management of menstrual hygiene and care methods.

Solution

The Orientame Foundation, through the delivery of menstrual cups and trainings on their use, seeks to sensitize girls and women about menstruation. We want to provide information about the proper management of menstrual hygiene, dispelling myths and taboos. We aim to contribute to the autonomy of girls and women in some cities in Colombia: Palenque (Bolivar), Soledad (Barranquilla), Villas del Rosario (Cucuta), Soacha (Cundinamarca) and Cuba (Pereira).

Long-Term Impact

With the delivery of menstrual cups for hygiene self-care, 2,500 vulnerable girls and women from diverse backgrounds (Afro - Colombian, indigenous and migrants) will benefit in these challenging pandemic times. The menstrual cups that will be provided to the beneficiaries are an efficient, economical, long-term and safe method of hygiene, with the additional benefit of being environmentally friendly.
