Access to education remains one of the most pressing challenges facing rural communities in Liberia. While the lack of school buildings is often emphasized, our field experience shows that the deeper barrier is the affordability of education for low-income families.
In many rural and small communities, education is not truly free. Families are required to pay tuition or informal fees, purchase uniforms and learning materials, cover transportation, and meet examination costs. For households already struggling with poverty, these expenses are prohibitive, forcing parents to make difficult decisions about their children’s future.
A common coping strategy is sending children, especially girls, to live with relatives in urban areas, with the hope that they will access better schooling and opportunities. However, in many cases, these expectations are not met. Children are often not enrolled in school and may instead face neglect, domestic labor, or exploitation, increasing their vulnerability to abuse and disrupting their development.
These challenges have a significant impact on gender equality. When resources are limited, boys are often prioritized for education, while girls are kept at home, sent away, or pushed into early responsibilities. This reinforces cycles of inequality and limits long-term opportunities for girls.
Providing free or low-cost, community-based education is essential. It allows children to remain safely within their families, reduces reliance on risky migration, and improves enrollment and retention for both boys and girls. By making education affordable and accessible, families are empowered to invest in their children’s future, strengthening communities and building a more resilient and productive generation.
