As we celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child this week with the theme ‘Digital generation. Our generation’. Meet Portia she is 16years and in grade 11. Portia aspires to become the first medical doctor in her village. Unfortunately, she doesn’t get access to the good internet to research and learn more about her passion. During the pandemic, she missed out on many of the online and digital learning opportunities for senior high school students. Portia’s story is just one out of many across the country especially with girls living in rural Ghana. Access to the internet is no longer a privilege hence it should be affordable and easily accessible to all especially school going girls and boys living in underprivileged and rural communities. The pandemic revealed the huge digital divide in our country with students living in villages and underserved communities outside the capital experiencing the impact. This is the reason why we are building this multipurpose STEM youth development centre in Portia’s village as part of our She Shines program which is a gender-focused project to equip and empower living in underserved communities to make a living, make a statement, and make a difference. The four classroom blocks will have full internet connectivity, laptops, and digital learning and teaching equipment and seasonal STEM extra-curriculum actitivies. Our mission is to inspire the next generation of Ghanaian females in STEM-related careers living in rural communities like Ayenya. The entire project will cost $50,000, we have so far raised $6000 and a lot has been done with it. We want to thank all who have supported us so far and we encourage you to continue to share this project with your friends and networks.
Thank you
