Summary

In Sarame, Tanzania, students walk up to 7km to reach overcrowded schools lacking sanitation. These conditions and the lack of vocational training contribute to high dropout rates and to an above average youth unemployment. Since 2021, we are working to equip 140 young people with practical, job-ready skills through access to quality vocational education. Our curriculum bridges education and work opportunity, offering training in IT, sustainable tourism, hospitality, and clean energy maintenance

Challenge

Tanzania faces critical education challenges: while primary enrolment nears 90%, secondary enrolment drops to 30%, with less than 25% completing lower-secondary. In rural Sarame, poor infrastructure, long commutes, overcrowded classes, and lack of vocational training worsen dropout rates. Youth unemployment is high, especially due to limited skills training. Gender inequalities and inadequate WASH facilities further hinder access to quality, inclusive education.

Solution

To overcome these challenges, we are building a vocational high school in Sarame to promote inclusive education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), and access to clean water and sanitation (SDG 6) through safe WASH facilities. Solar panels provide clean energy (SDG 7), while training in IT, tourism, and agriculture supports decent work (SDG 8). A permaculture garden teaches sustainable practices (SDG 12, 15). The project is rooted in strong local partnerships (SDG 17) for long-term impact.

Long-Term Impact

We anticipate that 140 adolescents aged 14 to 18 in Sarame and its environs will gain access to quality education and hands-on vocational training in purpose-built classrooms. Their families will be involved through activities. A team of 12 teachers and 4 support staff, will be recruited, providing stable employment. Lastly, more than 5230 residents will experience the ripple effects of this investment, new jobs, better WASH facilities, and an energized local economy driven by the graduates.
