One-third of the world's food is wasted, while nearly 800 million people still suffer from hunger.
In a world of abundance, this contradiction should not exist.
In August, our Civic Service Agency volunteer, Camille Collados, had the opportunity to participate in a food sharing and food sustainability awareness initiative with Stadtjugendring Stuttgart in Germany. She participated in collecting unsold but still edible products, redistributing them to people in precarious situations, and in awareness-raising workshops on food waste and responsible consumption. These local initiatives not only help limit waste, but also strengthen solidarity and rethink our relationship with food.
Building on this experience, she will soon be on assignment with LifeTime Projects in Tanzania, where we are building a vocational high school focused on food self-sufficiency, sustainable agriculture, and permaculture.
While food waste remains a predominantly Western issue, food insecurity is global, and it is by sharing concrete initiatives, valuing every resource, and promoting local production that we can, together, build fairer and more sustainable systems.
The challenge is not only to feed more, but to waste less, educate more, and create solutions that serve both people and the planet. Let's continue to share, learn, and act where it's most needed.
