Solar Panel Extension in Tanzania!

By Camille Collados | Project Officer

Good news! The solar panel extension has been installed in Sarame, where our environmental vocational high school project is taking shape.

As a reminder, this initiative addresses a local problem: the lack of a nearby vocational school forces many young people to interrupt their education due to a lack of accessible alternatives. LifeTime Projects and the Jabungu Foundation are joining forces to make this project part of a self-sufficient and environmentally friendly approach.

Why use solar energy?
In reality, several reasons led us, along with our local partner, the Jabungu Foundation, to choose solar panels to power our site.
Initially, the geographical area in which we are building the environmental high school does not allow us to benefit from the government grid. Indeed, the first house, located several kilometers away, required considerable work to connect the site to the national electricity grid. While the area is difficult to connect to the government grid, it is nevertheless ideally suited to the installation of solar panels. Indeed, with a minimum of 10 hours of sunshine per day, the region benefits from particularly favorable conditions for solar energy production. Thus, in keeping with our sustainable and environmentally friendly construction philosophy, we naturally chose to turn to solar panels to power our site.
Finally, although the region enjoys stable and abundant sunshine, the use of solar panels as an energy source remains exceptional. Therefore, the choice to install these solar panels is also intended to set an example, to encourage other people in the region to turn to green electricity, simply showing them that solar energy is a viable alternative.

Why are we talking about expansion?
An initial network of solar panels providing electricity for the camp's work and daily life was installed in 2024 thanks to financial support from EDF. Since then, this system has allowed us to build the foundations of our site, brick by brick. However, since our goal for this project remains self-sufficiency, we felt it was essential to be able to meet the drinking water needs of our community and our future students. Indeed, after analysis, the water available from our feed is unfit for human consumption due to its excessive fluoride content.

Thus, in June 2025, our site received a water purification system to make the water safe and drinkable. This water purifier consumes a lot of energy; our previous solar panel system was no longer powerful enough to meet the machine's electricity needs. This situation led to the decision to expand our solar system, and we are particularly proud of the speed with which this solution was implemented.

What's next?
We remain focused: continuing to address the challenges that such a project may present, always with a responsible and sustainable approach. We are proud to announce that our path to self-sufficiency for the vocational high school continues:

  • Fodder provides access to water
  • The new solar panel system provides access to electricity
  • The water purification system provides access to drinking water

And that's not all! The efforts invested in the school farm are already bearing fruit. The trees are beginning to bear fruit, the crops are growing, the chickens will soon lay eggs... and the beehives are looking promising.

A big thank you to our partners involved, without whom none of this would be possible.

The next step on the road to opening the school: construction of the cafeteria and latrines to ensure good sanitary and nutritional conditions for students.
