Since February, the toilets’ construction has progressed well. The infrastructure and plumbery are finished and all that is left is to install the sinks, toilets and doors. As this building is only for boys, we are now looking forward to the construction of the girls’ toilets.
For Tanzanian girls, the lack of separate toilets and adequate hygiene makes them more likely to miss school, especially during their periods. Studies indicate that approximately 50% of schoolgirls miss school during their periods due to a lack of appropriate facilities. That is why it is essential to have safe, clean, gender-segregated toilets in our high school and to conduct menstrual hygiene awareness campaigns with students, teachers and parents.
Moreover, finalizing the construction of the toilets will allow us to register the school to the government and therefore, to welcome our first 140 students !
In the meantime, we are constantly improving our existing infrastructure. In late February, we bettered our water purification system. Indeed, we realised that the filtration system was likely to get clogged due to residue in the pumps and therefore installed a more efficient mechanism to ensure a continuous flow.
We are also expecting to expand our honey production by buying protection suits, extracting tools and new colonies of stingless bees. This will help us to provide nutritious meals to our students as honey is known for its health benefits such as its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and by providing antioxidants. In addition, selling our surplus and products made out of beeswax will help us become fully self-sufficient.
