This project provides men and women in rural Colombia with free, comprehensive reproductive healthcare and voluntary family planning resources. Procedures offered include tubal ligations, implants, and vasectomies. This initiative allows women to reduce impact on natural resources, take charge of their reproduction, and actively engage in grassroots efforts. Since 2019, Women for Conservation has funded 4,375 services, with hundreds of people on our waitlist.
In Colombia, over half of pregnancies are unplanned. Rural communities lack accessible reproductive healthcare and family planning resources. Unplanned pregnancies impede women from pursuing education and rising out of poverty, increase risk of unsafe abortions, and strain the family's and the Earth's resources, which is especially precarious in areas of high conservation importance. Population growth drives biodiversity loss.
Access to family planning could prevent 69 gigatons of carbon emissions by 2050 (Population Connection), and is inexpensive compared to other conservation tools. Women for Conservation partners with Profamilia in an ongoing project to provide comprehensive vasectomies, tubal ligations, implants, and cancer screenings, as well as transportation, meals, and accommodation, to rural Colombian families. This removes financial barriers to receiving this life-changing care.
Empowering women with access to reproductive healthcare leads to lower birth rates. We have provided services to 4,375 people: long-term, these families will be more able to break cycles of poverty and reduce pressure on fragile ecosystems. Lower birth rates slow CO2 emissions. Women who have control over their reproduction can pursue education & livelihoods, fight poverty, and are more equipped to care for kids when they choose to have them.
