Challenge

Nigeria's multi-ethnic and multi-religious diversities coincide with the North and South divide, with Muslims and Christians dominating each. This came with several deep distrust and and misunderstandings drawn along ethnic and religious lines. Demographic Health Survey (DHS) conducted in 2015 by UNICEF and the Nigerian government revealed that 13.2 million children were out of school in Nigeria. The World Poverty Clock revealed that 90.8 million Nigerians living in extreme poverty.

Solution

The first phase of the delivery of Active Citizens programme is class-based. This is delivered through an activity-based semi-official learning process. The programme adopts the metaphor of a river to typify the journey of an Active Citizen. The second phase is community-based. Active Citizens embark on community development projects in different local communities of their choice. They are encouraged to identify community problems, proffer solutions, draw and implement project action plan

Long-Term Impact

The programme structure, content and delivery are designed to ensure that participants imbibe inter-cultural leadership skills required to engender continuous dialogue, trust and understanding. Active Citizens embark on community development projects of their interest. These projects represent solutions to identified community problems. Working with the communities, the Active Citizens interact, cooperate and collaborate to implement sustainable community development projects.
