By Obora Odedo Dalmas | WOW Programme Supervisor
We took Joe (not his real name) to Haven Rehabilitation Centre in the next large town of Eldoret in November 2021. This was following daily contact with Joe through the World of Work (WOW) programme which Association of Mission Volunteers runs in Kitale. At the end of February 2022 Joe had successfully completed the 3 months alcohol addiction programme. During the 3 months we arranged a couple of visits toJoe to see how he was doing. During these visits the staff and counsellors at the centre reported that Joe was doing well. On one visit we brought Joe's sister and nephew to see him. During the programme Joe was appreciated for his ability to communicate and he was elected as public relations officer. Following Joe's sisters visit she agreed that when Joe completed the programme that he could come and live with her and her family for some time. This will allow the opportunity for Joe to be removed from the street environment which he was connected to for almost 25 years.
Joe completed successfully the programme and we arranged for him to be brought to his sisters home. Two weeks later we attended at his graduation back at Haven Centre. It was a great day for Joe. On this day he spoke of how he had realised that there is life in sobriety. He gave a speech where he appreciated the support of AMV in bringing him to the rehabilitation centre. We look forward to continuing to support Joe. This is likely to be in assisting him to run a small business.
We thank those who have supported AMV in this project.
