Addressing basic needs for refugees on Kos

By Jasmine Deuker | Project Manager

The last months of 2025 were marked by many changes at the Hub. As Kos gradually transitioned out of the tourist season, several of our regular community members lost their jobs and temporarily moved to Athens until the next season begins again. During this period, we also introduced a new service: access to laundry facilities at the community centre. Because this service is mainly needed by regulars, its use is still limited for now.

Our team also went through important transitions. In early November, our Greek teacher left, which meant we had to discontinue our bi-weekly Greek lessons. As we still wanted to provide language-learning opportunities, we adapted quickly and now offer daily English practice sessions. These usually take place at a fixed time, but we also organise extra sessions on demand whenever possible to better accommodate the schedules of refugees and asylum seekers.

The festive spirit at the end of the year created new opportunities for engagement with the local community. We took part in a local bazaar, where we sold clothes - and thanks to the generosity of locals, we actually left with more clothes than we arrived with. Our participation in the Kos Christmas market was also a success, and preparing for it brought the whole team and community together through cooking and crafting activities.

This quarter was additionally rich in capacity-building opportunities for our team. We received training on how to conduct interviews with refugees, as well as a “training of trainers” in Psychological First Aid.

Despite all these changes (seasonal shifts, volunteer turnover, movement of community members), some things remained constant. Our regular community meals continue to be as lively as ever, bringing warmth and connection that contrasted beautifully with the grey skies and short winter days.
