Project Report | Apr 18, 2026
Project Report | Jan 1, 2026 - Apr, 2026

By Maria Mudenda | Advocacy and Fundraising Manager

Summary

As 2026 began, LGBTQIA+ communities in Tanzania continued to operate under restrictive legal and social conditions characterized by criminalization, stigma, and persistent misinformation. These conditions continue to limit access to safe spaces, services, and public visibility.

This reporting period represents a continuity phase rather than expansion. The project focused on sustaining th systems and outcomes established in 2025, operating under significantly reduced financial capacity.

In 2025, the project raised $2,900, enabling structured programming and broad engagement. In contrast, betwen January and April 2026, only $400 was raised, resulting in a sharp reduction in operational capacity. Despite thi th project prioritized continuity ofsupport to ensure that all previously engaged beneficiaries remained supported

What we accomplished during this perio

All activities during this reporting period focused on maintaining and reinforcing 2025 program outcomes. No n beneficiary cohorts were introduced.

1. Continued engagement with trained 2025 cohort (99 participants total)

The project maintained structured engagement with all individuals trained in 2025

  • 66 LGBTQIA+ individuals
  • 33 allies

Rather than new trainings, the focus shifted to reinforcement activities:

  • Follow-up peer engagement session
  • Knowledge retention and safety practice reinforcement
  • Informal mentoring and community support continuity

This ensured that prior training investments remained active and effective.

2. Psychosocial support and peer engagement

Approximately 42 psychosocial support and engagement sessions were conducted during this period, including:

  • Peer-to-peer emotional support interactions
  • Informal counseling and check-ins
  • Crisis response support where needed
  • Community-based resilience discussions

These activities ensured continuity of psychosocial care exclusively for the 2025 beneficiary cohort.

3. Sustained awareness and dialogue activities

Building on 2025 outputs (3 dialogue sessions reaching ~300 individuals), the project maintained:

  • Safe, small-scale dialogue spaces within existing networks
  • Continued use of previously developed advocacy materials
  • Reinforcement of stigma-reduction messaging in trusted community settings

No expansion into new geographic or population groups was possible due to funding limitations.

Results and impact

This reporting period reflects impact preservation rather than expansion.

Key outcomes include:

  • Continued psychosocial stability among 2025 beneficiaries, with reduced isolation and sustained emotional resilience
  • Retention and application of knowledge gained through 2025 trainings, particularly around safety and identity awareness
  • Strengthened peer support systems operating under reduced facilitation
  • Full continuity of engagement with no loss of contact among trained beneficiaries

The most significant result is that all 2025 beneficiaries remained actively supported despite a major funding reduction.

Challenges faced

The primary challenge was a severe reduction in funding:

  • 2025 funding: $2,900
  • 2026 (Jan–Apr) funding: $400

This resulted in:

  • Suspension of new training cohorts
  • Reduced outreach and limited geographic engagement
  • Reliance on low-cost, peer-led support systems
  • Increased operational vulnerability

Risk status

At current funding levels, the project has an estimated one-month operational sustainability window without additional resources. Beyond this point, psychosocial and peer support activities will be at risk of interruption.

Lessons learned

  1. Cohort continuity protects impact
Maintaining engagement with the 2025 cohort ensured zero attrition and preserved program outcomes.
  2. Peer-led systems are highly cost-effective
Community-led psychosocial support remained functional even under severe funding constraints.
  3. Impact is durable but not self-sustaining without funding
Previous investments continue to generate outcomes, but system stability depends on continued financial support.

Plans for next period

The project enters a stabilization phase focused on:

  • Maintaining psychosocial and peer support for the existing 2025 cohort
  • Protecting established community safety structures
  • Seeking urgent funding to restore core programming

A minimum funding target of $7,000 is required to:

  • Restore structured trainings
  • Resume outreach activities
  • Stabilize psychosocial support systems
  • Prevent interruption of services

Without this funding, the project will remain at risk of reduced or suspended operations.

How you can help

Support at this stage is critical to preserving three years of community investment.

Funds will directly support:

  • Psychosocial support for LGBTQIA+ individuals at risk
  • Maintenance of peer-led safety and resilience networks
  • Restoration of training and awareness activities

Without urgent funding, the project risks suspension, leaving all 2025 beneficiaries without continued support systems.

Thank you

This reporting period demonstrates that meaningful impact is not only measured by expansion, but also by continuity under constraint.

Despite extremely limited funding, the project has maintained full engagement with its 2025 cohort and preserved essential psychosocial and community support systems.

However, this level of continuity is not sustainable without renewed investment. Continued support is essential to preserve progress already achieved.
