Project report- LGBT Voice Tanzania

By Maria Mudenda | Advocacy and Fundraising Manager

Introduction

Thanks to your generosity, LGBT Voice Tanzania has continued to respond to the urgent needs of LGBTQIA+ people in one of the world’s most challenging environments. With your support through GlobalGiving, we have been able to deliver essential services, strengthen community resilience, and advocate for equality despite widespread discrimination and violence.

To date, the project has raised $1,259 of the $10,000 goal. Every contribution has made a tangible difference for individuals who are often excluded from healthcare, education, employment, and personal safety.

Project Objectives

The project was designed to achieve the following objectives:

• Engage more than 100,000 individuals via social media platforms.

• Reach 500,000 people through anti-bias campaigns in traditional and digital media.

• Provide mental and behavioral health support to community members.

• Conduct quarterly advocacy and constitutional protection training for lawyers.

• Deliver educational resources on health, trauma, abuse, sex education, and empowerment.

• Build partnerships with at least 50 organizations and 25 community stakeholders.

Although financial limitations prevented full realization of all objectives, important progress has been made in key priority areas.

Key Achievements

1. Development of Training Manual

In collaboration with technical partners, a comprehensive training manual was produced. This manual aligns with international human rights standards and equips trainers to lead effective community-based initiatives.

2. Peer Training

Six LGBTQ+ individuals successfully completed peer educator training, enabling them to act as local instructors and advocates. Each received detailed resources and ongoing support to expand their impact within their communities.

3. Advocacy and Awareness

• Promoted inclusive policies within educational institutions to counter marginalization.

• Responded to increasing cases of LGBTQ+ youth expulsions by challenging discriminatory practices and collaborating with legal and human rights partners.

• Engaged both local and international stakeholders to advocate for equitable education and protection of LGBTQ+ rights.

4. Trauma Counseling and Mental Health Services

In response to rising cases of arrests, detention, and violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity, the project provided psychosocial support to over 200 individuals, including trauma counseling, mental health care, and wellbeing resources.

Impact

LGBT Voice Tanzania has made meaningful strides in fostering inclusion and empowerment within LGBTQIA+ communities. Key outcomes include:

• Training Resources Developed: In collaboration with technical partners, a high-quality training manual has been created, equipping LGBTQIA+ trainers with human rights-based resources tailored for community use.

• Peer Educator Capacity Building: Six individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community received intensive training and supporting materials, enabling them to conduct advocacy and awareness-raising in their local areas.

• Strengthened Advocacy in Education: The project actively addressed discrimination in educational institutions by working to reduce bullying and expulsions of LGBTQIA+ students, contributing to safer and more inclusive schools.

• Visibility & Narrative Shift: By amplifying personal stories of resilience and identity, the project has begun to challenge stereotypes and foster empathy, helping reshape societal attitudes.

These achievements reflect significant progress toward creating safer, more inclusive spaces—showing that, even amid financial and legal constraints, strategic interventions can yield powerful community-level impact.

Challenges & Resilience

Operating in Tanzania remains highly restrictive. Same-sex relations are criminalized, advocacy efforts are curtailed, and LGBTQIA+ people continue to experience harassment, violence, and exclusion. Limited funding further constrained large-scale advocacy campaigns and training programs.

Despite these barriers, your contributions have enabled us to remain resilient. Most importantly, they have reassured LGBTQIA+ Tanzanians that they are not alone.

Looking Ahead

Our commitment to promoting equity and affirmation for LGBTQIA+ Tanzanians remains steadfast. To build on current progress, the project will focus on the following priorities:

• Scaling Peer-Led Initiatives: Strengthen and broaden peer education efforts by training additional community leaders to serve as advocates, educators, and safe-space ambassadors.

• Expanding Training Outreach: Scale up the adoption of the training manual—integrating it into workshops, school programs, and informal networks to reach a wider audience.

• Deepening Educational Advocacy: Continue collaborating with schools, educators, and policymakers to institutionalize inclusive and affirming environments for LGBTQIA+ students.

• Elevating Voices and Narratives: Sustain and broaden platforms for LGBTQIA+ individuals to share their stories—focusing on community media, public forums, and creative projects to reduce stigma and humanize lived experiences.

• Securing Resources for Sustainability: Leverage donor support to deepen our advocacy initiatives, extend outreach beyond Dar es Salaam, and ensure that community-led efforts can endure and adapt regardless of legal and financial pressures.

Your continued support is essential. Together, we can deepen reach, sustain impact, and progress toward a more equitable society where all LGBTQIA+ individuals in Tanzania can live with dignity, respect, and inclusion.

Appreciation

On behalf of the entire team and the LGBTQIA+ community we serve, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your generosity provides not only essential resources but also hope, dignity, and courage. Together, we are building resilience and advancing equality in Tanzania.

With gratitude,
