The conflict between Israeli forces and armed groups in Gaza has resulted in casualties among civilians on both sides. Between May 10-17, 200 Palestinians have been killed, more than 4,700 have been injured and 58,000 people are currently displaced across Gaza, as reported by the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). International Medical Corps is activating our emergency response team to address the humanitarian needs.
Between May 10-17, the conflict has led to 200 Palestinians deaths, more than 4,700 injuries, and the displacement of some 58,000 people in Gaza. Infrastructure and telecommunication networks have been destroyed, and power supply has been reduced to an average of six to eight hours per day, disrupting healthcare and other basic services, including water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). As of May 17, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing reported thousands of buildings suffered damages.
International Medical Corps, which was already on the ground supporting healthcare facilities and operating mobile medical teams, is now providing psychological first aid and other mental health services to affected communities. To address the widespread needs, we will continue to work through our staff on the ground and with local partners to reach conflict-affected areas with an approach that includes emergency medical services, mental health and psychosocial support, WASH and protection.
International Medical Corps first began addressing needs in Gaza in 2008. Across our activities, we have worked to provide emergency medical and mental health and psychosocial support services. Today, we also implement nutrition and food security activities. Working with local partners, we will ensure a sustainable response and building local health and health-related capacity.
