CHANGING DESTINIES

By Priti Bhombe | Director, Fund raising Department

A big thank you from all the little ones at our Snehankur adoption center. Your support is a great boost to us in making sure every infant we rescue and unmarried mother leaving their baby in our care has the best future possible.

These include babies like Avani, a cute baby girl born to a HIV+ mother. She too was diagnosed as HIV+ at birth. Timely anti-HIV medication, close monitoring of her vitals, a healthy diet and lots of love and care helped her survive against all odds and, after 18 months of treatment and investigations, she was declared HIV negative. Because of her initial HIV+ diagnosis, it took us two years and several rejections by potential parents to find her a new family. We are very pleased to report that she finally did find a family and recently travelled overseas to the USA with her adoptive parents to start a new innings of her life. It’s down to your support that we were able to take care of all her treatments, special care and other expenses, including paying the staff that shower all of our babies with the vital love and care they need to overcome challenging starts to their lives and to develop and thrive.

Just as you gave Avani a great second chance in life, you are also helping girls like Puja overcome their harder to forget traumas. When she reached puberty, Puja’s father started repeatedly sexually harassing and abusing her and she soon fell pregnant. He threatened her to keep her mouth shut but she bravely sought our help and we removed her from his evil clutches. Our counselors helped her gather further courage to lodge a police complaint against him which also resulted in opposition and alienation from her tribal community. We provided all the required medical aid and psychological support to help her deliver a baby girl, however she was tragically born with several health defects and we were unable to save her: she died soon after being born. Again we supported Puja and gave her refuge in our shelter home. It will take time for her wounds to heal but with the love and support of our dedicated team and well-wishers like you, she is slowly starting to see a glimmer of sunlight breaking through the horizon.

We really appreciate what you have already done to help girls like Avani and Puja and want to let you know that you can help us raise even more money by voting for our project image in the Global Giving photo contest. Click here to register your vote before Friday 24 August and we could win US$1,000, https://www.globalgiving.org/poll/vote/?pollOptionId=1164
