Safe care and adoption for Indian Babies

Shyam's Story

This is Shyam, a lovable two year old boy who arrived at our doors in April earlier this year. His mother came to us distraught having reached a point that she was no longer able to take care of him due to ill mental and physical health. He was in a heart-breaking state, it was very clear that she had been struggling for some time. Little Shyam was severely dehydrated and malnourished, his digestive system was struggling to continue, his hand was fractured and he had multiple abrasions and lacerations. The neglect this poor little boy had experienced was written all over his ailing body.

Our medical team speed into action providing the specialist healthcare he so desperately needed. Shyam admitted to the local paediatric hospital where his doctors addressed his critical needs and within three weeks he returned to our centre where he has since been loved back to life. With the help of our wonderful staff and centre volunteers little Shyam has made a full recovery; he can now hold solid food, has begun to walk and can be heard chattering away with staff and other children. Shyam was recently freed for adoption and we are very excited to announce that he will shortly be adopted into a loving local family to start a new life with dedicated, caring parents.

It has been a happy ending for Shyam, but Shyam is just one child, in the last three months Snehalaya adoption centre has facilitated the adoption of thirteen babies and young children all with their own stories. With your support our adoption centre staff can be there to support these children and provide a safe place in which parents can trust that their children will receive the best care and have the chance to build better futures if they are unable to care for them for whatever reasons without judgement. 

Reaching Even Further

 We strive to ensure that every child in need has access to our services and so in the last few months we have really ramped up our outreach work. We’ve been connecting with the police stations around the Ahmednagar district encouraging them to contact us if they feel any women or children may be in need of our help and to send abandoned babies and children our way. Similarly, we are networking our way round the district hospitals, having visited 53 in the last few months, and encouraging doctors to contact us when unwanted babies are born. We are also moving forward in technology terms and have many successful WhatsApp groups enabling hospital staff and police to contact us directly any time night or day.

We would not exist without our individual fundraisers who go to great lengths locally and in their networks to make a difference to our Women & Girls. Alpa Oswal - is one such support has single handedly raised $2400 and gathered much needed basic supplies (formula, soap, cloth diapers, sanitary towels) for the infants & girls in our adoption centre and long stay home.  Alpa your kindness is a beautiful gift and we are excited to welcome you and your family at our projects in mid November.
