Going home...

By Joyce Connolly | Honorary Director

Our babies have a range of special needs
Our babies have a range of special needs

We have fantastic news about Monali who we updated you on last September. You may remember, she was found abandoned in some rocks and we were in fear that we would need to amputate her arm. Thanks to your support she has received medical support and her arm has been saved although she does still require surgery and physiotherapy to fully recover, something which her new parents, doctors from Mumbai, are happy to help her through, much as they would if they had given birth to a child with similar needs.

Another equally as accepting couple, originally from India, have recently returned to their Dubai home with their adopted child Anil, where he will receive the small surgery required on his eyes.

We still have 11 other children in our care with a range of special needs, from cleft palates to cerebral palsy, waiting to find homes. Although it can take longer to find the right parents for them and rejection rates are on the rise due to the new CARA adoption process, which has seen one of our babies rejected 15 times already purely based on his medical reports, we are seeing a rise in acceptance of children requiring extra love from adoptive parents.

While they wait, they are in very good hands with our team of caretakers who work in three eight-hour shifts looking after all their needs. Among them are Rana and Shalina, both in their 60s with grown up families of their own, who are always full of energy and take particular interest in the children requiring medical care. Much like surrogate grandmothers they go the extra mile and can often be found in hospitals attending to and sleeping by the bedside of our babies undergoing treatment.

Despite the bonds they form with their young charges, they are also among those celebrating when we find loving, adoptive parents for our babies. The celebrations are even sweeter when we can reunite a baby with its biological family, like in the case of Rajiv. His mother died under suspicious circumstances after which his father went on the run, his grandparents were arrested on suspicion of harrassing her into suicide, and the six-month-old was put into our care. Two and half years later and his father is still missing, however his grandparents have been found innocent of all charges and have recently filed for custody of the confident youngster and we are very much looking forward to sending him back to his family home with them.

Thank you! Your support is ensuring that babies like Monali and Rajiv receive the best care, medical support and love until it is time for them to be safely taken home.
